Introduction

Feng Wei is a 'Jack of all trades, master of none' character who delivers extremely well when it comes down to poking at small distances with his jab strings 1,3, 1,2, 1,1, a pseudo-homing mid B+4 and a i14 DF+1. Combining this with the evasive moveset of Feng makes him a unique blend of evasive offense. The whole of his gameplan revolves around instigating the opponent to retaliate into his poking, after which Feng can retaliate back with his fast Counter-hit tools like B+1, 1,1, UF+2, highly rewarding parries like F+1+2, and Back Kenpo B+3+4 evasion. Even though Feng might look too good on paper, he is extremely balanced and has to take risks against defensive players, be it by dashing or by choosing risky pokes like DB+3 to keep the offense.

Feng is extremely beginner-friendly. He is a fundamental-based character with enough specific scenario-based options that can be handy in a lot of matchups (i.g Nina/Anna). If you're a fan of keeping up the high pace and high awareness in split-second decisions, this character is built for you.

Strengths

  • Pokes: Has one of the best arsenals of pokes, if not the best. Variety of lows and mids, extremely compatible with each other.
  • Strong Defensive Tools: Arguably the most risk-free rewarding stances in the game F+3+4 and B+3+4, in addition to other retaliation options such as B+1 and UF+2.
  • Ease of Play: Simple commands promote players to dive straight into mind games rather than struggle with execution.

Weaknesses

  • Has to engage in multiple interactions, which requires strong awareness and may expose the player to counterhits.
  • Weak to sidestep left, even though he has an I12 mid (B4) that tracks to both sides. It creates distance on hit, which renders the whole concept of poking difficult to enforce.
  • Struggles in mid-range, backdash into duck at mid-range is one of the effective strategies against feng.

Heat System

  • Feng's heat system adds another layer of mind games, allowing a mid extension to B4 -> H.B4, 3+4, which is +7 on-block, but interruptible by i11 / SSR. This move also greatly enhances his wall damage, unlocking a spike ender in open and wall situations both. He may also access this extension directly by H 3+4. Moreover, FF1+2* (full hold) becomes a guard-break with i10 guaranteed, complemented by B1 turning into a KND/wallsplat on-hit with guaranteed follow-up.

Top 10 Moves

Feng has a barrage of pokes, all complemented by the mental stack of his jab strings. 1,3 is a non-jailing string that baits the opponent to duck-launch Feng. This is complemented by 1,1, a high-mid -11 CH launcher string to catch opponents challenging the jabs. These two can also be mixed for a simple high-mid Layer 1 mind game. Experienced Feng players will mix single jabs and the strings together, creating a strong mental stack.
hi10+1 oB+8 oH
Feng's fastest pseudo-homing mid poke, extremely consistent at tracking opponents moving to either side, with a risk of being -10 OB. This is complemented by B4,2, a high extension to catch opponents punishing the mid. One may be ambitious and hit-confirm the whole string to hit the moving opponent for 30~damage. He gets another extension in heat, H B4,3+4, +7 OB non-hitconfirmable natural string. This basically turns it into an i12 wallsplat punish.
mi12~13-10 oB+2 oH

DF1

Feng's main mid poke, i14 and 0 OB. Helps Feng set up a jab string or loop DF1 again. Although this move is easily stepable to the left, B4 may come into play, creating a poke offense loop.
mi14+0 oB+6 oH+36g oCH

B1

Feng quickest anti-retaliation tool, i10 and -12 OB. On CH, it gives a free shoulder for chunky damage. In heat, this becomes his optimal i10 punish, as B1 naturally gives a free shoulder without the need for CH. General placement of this move will be when Feng is at 0, -1, or +1. Also tracks to Feng's weak side
hi10~11-12 oB+1 oH+36a (+28) oCH

F2,1,2

A slightly slow but highly rewarding hit-confirmable mid-mid-mid string that tracks to Feng's weak side. Extremely effective when the opponent's back is against a wall, as it induces a mental stack of the last hit being launch-punishable but wallsplatting on hit.
m, m, mi15-19 oB+19a (+14) oH

DF4

Feng i15 mid-range poke which has a high extension (DF4,3) which wall splats and a mid extension (DF4,2) which is -11 OB. This is used to mix with DB3 due to its huge range and similar speed.
mi15-6 oB+5 oH
Approaching tool from Feng's lingering shadow/Snakedash. 0 OB and gives a shoulder on CH. Can be used to enforce a different mind game, as it forces the opponent to stay in crouch while Feng stays in neutral.
mi16~17+0c oB+7c oH+13 oCH

B3

Mid/long range pressure tool of Feng, newly added in T8. Extremely slow and linear at i23, but gives +4 OB and +6 if the player enters LS by holding DF afterwards. Gives a free ground-hitting follow-up on counterhit.
mi22~23+4 oB+6 oH+10a oCH

FF4

Slow at i18, but a hard callout to people who keep sidewalking Feng. You have to be careful, as it is -15 OB, but with another follow-up that is again a launcher (FF4,3), which is -14. Layers upon layers in the mind game.
mi19~20-15 oB+30a (+20) oH

FF2

Feng's demon paw, i18 heat engager, long range, safe at -9 OB. Also wallsplats on normal hit and may sometimes crush jabs too. This is Feng's heat launcher as well
mi18~19-9 oB+16a (+7) oH

Notable Moves

WS1

Feng's longest reaching approach move, comes out from lingering shadow. -3 OB, this move combined with movement may force the opponent to respect it enough that one may start pressuring with jabs or DF1's.
mi13-3 oB+3 oH

WS2

Feng's safe WS mid, counterhit launcher, i15 quick. Can be used to catch people stepping to Feng's weak side after DB3 or to catch people jabbing him (although the jab crush is extremely inconsistent and has a window of 5-9f)
mi15~16-7 oB+29g oH+78a (+62) oCH

D4

Best round ender in the game, hands down. i14, 8 dmg and -11 OB/0 OH, which has a mid wallsplatting follow-up, which again is -10 only. Complements Feng's game plan really well since it's 0f OH
Li14~15-11 oB+0 oH

D2

Feng's go-to high crush low, 16 dmg, -12 OB. Even though it is i20, some people may be able to react to its animation.
Li20~21-12 oB-1 oH

DB3

Feng's longest reaching, momentum building low. i17, -15 OB, +4 OH with high crushing starting at i6. This low is considered the make-or-break move for Feng players, as either it'll switch the tide of momentum or he simply dies.
li17-15 oB+4c oH+0d oCH
Similar to D2, but this low has multiple follow-ups with significantly low damage. One may use this move to fish for a counterhit launch with DB2,2 (hit-confirmable, 16OB) or complete the full string to call out for DB2,2 punish.
li20~21-15 oB-4 oH

CD 1 (QCF+1)

Feng's power-low, 18 dmg, -14 OB and 0 OH. Can be extremely effective to break turtles, as it leaves at mid-range to loop the situation or wait for a whiff punish. The player may opt to stay in crouch after QCF1 OH for crouch offense.
Li18~19-14 oB+0 oH+12g oCH

SS4

Only comeback tool Feng has since he doesn't have power lows to keep pushing momentum, SS4 can have multiple placements to make a comeback. Some of them include WS1 > SS4, D4 > SS4, D2 > SS4 etc with the risk of being staggered OB.
li20~22-31c oB-3~-1 oH+71a (+55) oCH

FC DF4,1

The new addition in Feng's low arsenal, -14 OB, +3 OH in BT. By it's own, FC DF4 has no true mixups from BT and can be interrupted with a duckjab. The player may complete the whole string with FC DF4,1, be +6 OH with 23 dmg, but it comes with a risk of getting ducked and launched.
l, hi19~20-2 oB+6 oH

SS1+2

Comes out from SS at 21f. This mid is +1 OB and wallsplats/KND OH. This move is optimally used when the wall is in favour, as it has a built-in pushback. Some may also mix it with SS4 as both moves have similar startup but extremely distinct animations.
mi22~23+1~+2 oB+21a (+12) oH

F4

Feng's preferred whiff punish launcher for bigger whiffs. i18 high, -9 OB. Also the preferred keepout as well, extremely strong in this aspect since you have the liberty to transition to BT, which makes it difficult to whiff punish.
hi18~19-9 oB+52a oH

F3,2

Although this move is slow at i21, F3 itself is -3, and the delayable high follow-up is -3 as well, which gives a KND with free follow-up. The only use of this move lies in the fact that it hits from long-range, where players do not expect Feng to have the reach, with a small mind game of ducking the follow-up or taking turn instantly after F3 OB.
m, hi21-3 oB+8 oH+43a (+35) oCH

3,3,4

The perfect mix with DB3 at short range, this mid-mid-low string comes out at i16, where the first 2 hits are -9 OB. Even though it is only +2 OH, the damage makes up for it (25dmg). 3,3,4 may be thrown out to catch people retaliating after 3,3 for a free follow-up.
m, h, li16-12 oB+7c oH+17a oCH

Stances

F3+4

Shifting cloud (STC), inbuilt launching parry stance for the initial 3f - 18f (no elbows/knees/headbutt) Stays in STC upon absorbing a single hit. Used for retaliating against jab strings, DF+1 strings, etc

B3+4

Back Kenpo (KNP), an evasive backstep generally used to evade without committing a backdash. Can transition into STC by holding forward.

QCF | Snakedash | Lingering Shadow

Player may access this stance by inputting QCF. Can transition into WS by D,DF, n, or invoke neutral by cancelling QCF with up. This stance is generally used to switch timings and to close distances.

Panic Moves

UB+1

Feng's Backswing blow, extremely risky being -15 on-block, gives a guaranteed followup on CH
mi25~26-15 oB+10a (+1) oH+30a (+22) oCH

UF+2

Sidestep evasive panic button, minimal risk being -10, and gives a free followup on CH
mi18-10 oB+3 oH+52a (+21) oCH

B1

KND on CH with a free followup, comes at i10
hi10~11-12 oB+1 oH+36a (+28) oCH

F3+4

Shifting cloud parry, Feng gets a full launch upon parrying any 2 hits (elbows/knees/headbutts not included)

B3+4

Back kenpo, Feng's evasive backstep stance

Frame Traps

1 → B1
D4 → B1
DF1 → B1
DB3 → WS2

Knowledge Checks

F4,2

-14 on block, but i10 punishers will whiff if attempted in panic.
h, mi18~19-14 oB+31a (+16) oH

FC DF4 -> BT mix

Opponent may option-select the BT mixup here by duck jabbing
li19~20-8c oB+3 oH

DF4,3 -> F3+4

Quick retaliation with 1,2 jabs will result in getting launched
m, hi15-4 oB+15g oH+27a oCH

Defensive Tips

Sidestep Left

Feng users only have a few options that will track to Feng's right (your left), and it is always deliberate when they throw out those moves to track you. These include B4, DB3, or WS2. Otherwise, Feng can be stepped extremely easily to the left.

Backdash -> Duck at midrange

Feng's preferred range of play is around 1jab. Backdashing will force the Feng user to either dash-pressure (which is risky) or throw mid-range moves like DB3 or DF4. The mid-range mids carry relatively less risk of getting hit by so backdashing -> duck becomes a good defensive strategy.

Elbow/Knees

Feng users may throw out STC (F3+4) or 1+2 in panic situations. It's important to be aware and check those situations using elbows/knees or maybe throws as well sometimes.

Be patient

Feng users prefer doing UF2 in round-end situations or UB1 in panic situations. It's important to stay patient to bait these moves.

Defensive Move Handling

1,3

Feng players use this instead of single jabs unless you call them out. This string is duckable and -5 OB
h, hi10-5 oB+8~+9 oH
New i12 mid-high punish for Feng. Can transition into LS (CD) for a mix-up, which is -1 OB. B4 is -10 OB, and the second hit of the string is duckable. It is recommended to punish B4 every time unless there's a wall behind you where you'll have to duck it.
m, hi12~13-6 oB+3 oH+20cg oCH

DB3

Feng's go-to low at mid-range to start offense, -15 OB.
li17-15 oB+4c oH+0d oCH

SS4 | DF3 (mix)

This is an important one, although it might look like a mix, but one can always backdash to avoid SS4 clean-hit launch after the general setups (e.g WS1 > SS4, D2 > SS4, D4 > SS4 etc)
li20~22-31c oB-3~-1 oH+71a (+55) oCH

FF4,3

Feng users have a habit of throwing the first hit of the string. However, the first hit of the string is -15 itself. At least launch-punish it once during a set to establish a mind game.
m, mi19~20-14 oB+32a (+22) oH

FC DF4

i14 punish is guaranteed on this low regardless of whether the Feng player does the high string or not. Also, there is no guaranteed BT mix-up OH, as one can always interrupt with a duck jab.
li19~20-8c oB+3 oH

Matchups

Good matchups

AnnaNina

The Williams sisters have the best df1's in this game, with multiple extensions and stances for continued offense. However, this is easily negated by Feng's STC stance. It can also be noted that this is 'more' viable against Nina since she has quite a lot of tools that are two hits to stance the offense or introduce a mind game (jab strings, df41, B22, df1,2, etc)

Xiaoyu

Xiaoyu is among the ones who lack a WS i15 launcher. Even though there are other characters who lack the same, she is an interesting case because of her defensive archetype, where she has to AOP to evade a lot of opponents' offense and has to commit to low like DB2 for offense starters. Feng is able to beat her general offense starters or mixups (like SS4/SS1+2) by performing back kenpo. DB3 catches her AOP as well, which makes the risk-reward in Feng's favour.

Reina

Feng has one of the best defensive options against Reina's FF2 (e.g B1, STC), which, combined with SSL and D1 interrupts, can really scramble the offender's mind. Feng also has a 'true' option-select against Reina's hellsweep stance mix, a single back kenpo evades each and every option. This defensive option can only be countered by looping hellsweep into another hellsweep, which is risky.

Bad matchups

KazuyaDevil Jin

Feng's strong suit lies in poking. Jab strings, DF1, B4, WS1, D4, D2, DB3 all working in conjuction establishes the optimal Feng mindgame. However, Mishima users have a tendency of SS into electric due to its properties (fast recovery, big launch, +5OB etc) which can nullify the poke pressure. This counter to Feng's poking can be performed by any Mishima but Kaz/DJ are exclusives because of mediocre poking and more reliance on electric.
